Pensacola Sailing Adventure

Sea Scout Ships 851 and 360 had a sailing adventure from 26 June to 2 July. The ships chartered 4 sailboats ranging in length fro 28 to 38 ft from Emerald Coast Yachts in Pensacola Beach, FL. There 12 scouts and 8 leaders that made the trip. Below is group photo.
While rafted up for dinner one evening, we were hit by a severe thunder storm with gusty winds and rain. We had to rapidly break up the raft and the four boats scattered to ride out the storm. I was on a Hunter 28 with Gary Sawyer as the skipper. When we broke the raft, he and I were the only ones on the boat. We had to retrieve the anchor, took 4 tries to break it loose. We then motored around until the storm subsided. Then we anchored again for the night. gary and I kept 2 on/2 off anchor watches during the night to make sure we were not dragging the anchor. tiresome effort. Here is a picture of the storm as it approached our anchorage.

Working on the Mariner 19

Last Saturday was a beautiful day and we used it to good advantage to work on the sailboat. We were able to remove all the old stringers in the bottom of the boat. They were held in by fiberglass strips over the top. We used a chisel to cut the strips. The stringers were rotten and some of them broke apart as we removed them. We saved them all and will use them, as best we can, as patterns for the new stringers.

The boat has weathered the winter pretty well so far this year. There was only a small amount of water in the bilges and a few leaves. The tarp over the cockpit seems to be doing its job and keeping water and debris out of the boat.

We took the rudder home and we hope to get sand it down and get a fresh coat of varnish on it.

Ship 9851 Open House

Sea Scout Ship 9851 will host and open house to recruit new scouts. The open House will begin at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, December 8th, 2010. We will meet at:

Ship 9851 at the Jamboree

Ship 9851 visited the Middle Tennessee Council Jamboree at the Wilson County fairgrounds. Over 14,000 scouts, their families, and scout leaders visited the Jamboree in celebration of the 100 th anniversary of Boy Scouts. There were special areas for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venture Crews Richard Perona and Adam Chambers waiting for their turn at the skeet shooting event.

Participation in The Christmas in July Lighted Boat Parade

Sea Scout Ship 9851 had an entry in the Christmas in July Lighted Boat Parade sponsored by VFW Post 9851. Adam Chambers and Andrew Lamborn worked very hard to decorate VAGABUM, the boat owned by Burkett Nelson. Mr. Nelson was very kind to allow the ship to use his boat for the parade and the ship thanks him very much. Ship 9851 made a fun evening of this event and invited the families of the Sea Scouts to attend. We also had some special guests aboard including Danny Sutherland, Cherokee District Scout Executive, Skipper Andy Griswold of Ship 851, and Skipper George Ward of Ship 360.

here is First Mate Roy Cecil, Andrew, and Adam as they secure Santa Claus on Thursday night before the parade when we decorated VAGABUM. Of course we had to move him because he was in captain Nelsons way when operating the boat. So Santa ended up on the second deck where he could wave to all the observers and judeges at Sanders Ferry Park.

Last Thursday we had a joint meeting with Ships 851 and 360 at the Harbor island Yacht Club. The first event was a presentation by LT Potterpin of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary on conducting vessel safety checks. The Skipper Andy Griswald discussed the use of the various signals used to start a sailboat race.

We had a great crowd with Andrew Lamborn, Richard Perona, and Adam Chambers riding with the Skipper to the meeting. First Mate Roy brought a new member , David Pugh, to the meeting. David is an Eagle Scout and lives in Bethpage.

The Ship will meet at 10Am at VFW Post 9851 on Saturday 15 May. If the weather is good, we will go out on the Skipper's pontoon boat. If the weather is bad we will work on the sailboat or go for a swim test at the YMCA.

Please bring some swim trunks, a towel, and water. That way we will be ready for what ever way the wind blows.

We had a good meeting last week. the highlight of the meeting was the naming of our sailboat. We tried several ways to get a name including putting the alphabet letters in a hat and then drawing out constants and vowels. this did not give us anything useful. Then we each wrote out 3 names for the boat and then drew the winner out of the hat. The new name is WAKERIDER.

Mariner 19 Pictures

Here is the Ship's Mariner 19 sailboat. It is currently stored at the VFW Post. We have put a tarp over to keep rain and other gunk from collecting in the cockpit.
This photo shows the cuddy cabin enclosure. The original boat had a canvas cover the closed off the cabin. Somewhere along the line a wooden bulkhead with a hatch was installed. As you can see the wood is rotted and must be removed.

Here we see the cockpit floor. The stringers across the floor have rotted away. they are so bad that I believe the cockpit must have been full of water for a long time. They will have to be removed and new ones built and installed.

The winch on the trailer is bad shape. Whoever tied that knot was not a sailor. The snaphook is rusted and needs replacing along with rope being replaced by a wire cable. The eye on the stem of the boat is loose and I believe it is not water tight. We will have to seal that area up and strengthen it also.

The rudder is in decent shape and only needs to be sanded and them varnished.

There are plenty of tasks to be completed before the boat is safe and sailable. Hopefully we can get them done by summertime and get the boys out on the lake for sailing adventures.

Mariner 19 Status

Our boat is currently on a trailer at the VFW Post. My preliminary survey of the boats indicates that the hull is sound and the deck fittings are securely attached. The hull and interior need to be cleaned and waxed.

The standing rigging appears to be in good shape. It need a few new cotter pins and cushioning on the spreaders to prevent ripping the sails.

The sails are usable but need new battens and some new slides for attaching the sail top the boom and mast. Running rigging should probably be replaced.

The interior and cockpit need extensive work. The interior probably need new wood, both in the deck stringers and for some of the cabinets. The berth cushions need to be replaced and recovered.

The cockpit needs new stringers to support the deck and a new deck to go over the stringers. This will be the hardest task to get the boat ready to sail. Also new cockpit cushions are needed but we certainly can sail the boat without them. The cockpit rails need to be varnished.

The trailer need to be completely refurbished. The body needs to be painted, new lights need to be installed, the winch need rehab, and the wheel bearings need to be inspected. Also the boat supports need to be fixed.

When we are done, our boat should look like the one below.

Also we need a name so if anyone has a recommendation, let me or Roy know.

Sea Scouts is a co-ed program for young adults bewteen the ages of 14 and 20. All potential Sea Scouts and their parents are invited to attend. There will be a program to introduce the Ship leaders and the scouting program for the upcoming year.

Sea Scouts offers opportunities to learning boating, sailing, seamanship, and navigation skills. There will be numerous boating and sailing opportunities on Old Hickory Lake.

First Meeting of 2009

The first meeting of 2009 was devoted to learning about line and knots. Mr. Phil Haisler, a Post member and former Coast Guard Auxiliary member, taught us various knots and how to moor your boat using a special computer program. A special visitor was Howard Moomy, father of the Skipper. He talked about his time as a Sea Scout in the 1930's and as a crew member of the brig NIAGARA, a restored square rigged ship.

Charter Presentation

Recruiting at Hendersonville High School

Danny and I had another successful recruiting day at Hendersonville High School. We had our table set up in the hallway by the cafeteria and provided information on Sea Scout Ship 9851 to a wide variety of students. My sailboat continued to attract the attention of the students and thus we had the opportunity to provide information on the ship and the meeting on Tuesday night at 6:30 PM at VFW Post 9851.

Successful Session at Station Camp High School

Danny Sutherland (Cherokee District Executive) and I had a great time at Station Camp High School on Friday. We had table in the cafeteria and talked to students at all 4 lunch periods. I brought my remote controlled sailboat and number of books about sailing and seamanship. Danny brought a compass and depth finder plus a pair of fluorescent green flippers. These items caught the eye of numerous students who stopped by to talk to us. We handed out flyers with info on the nest meeting(Tuesday, 25 Nov at 6:30PM at the VFW Post). Several students indicated that they would come to the meeting.

VFW Post 9851, in conjunction with the Cherokee District of the Middle Tennessee Council of the Boy Scouts of America, will host Sea Scout Ship 9851. An Open House to recruit new members will be held at 6:30 PM on Monday, 17 November 2008 at the VFW Post on 73R New Shackle Island Road in Hendersonville, TN. All young adults between the ages of 14 an 19 are invited to attend. The Ship is a co-educational opportunity for young adults to learn about maritime history, Old Hickory Lake, and water sport skills such as boating, sailing, etc.
